    Using Popular Media and a Collaborative Approach to Teaching Grounded Theory Research Methods

    Popular movies were used in a doctoral-level qualitative research methods course as a way to help students learn about how to collect and analyze qualitative observational data in order to develop a grounded theory. The course was designed in such a way that collaboration was central to the generation of knowledge. Using media depictions had the practical advantage of enabling the group to create fieldnotes from a common set of data collected simultaneously in a short period of time. Fictional representations in popular media can provide the basis to learn about both the methods and foundational assumptions for conducting qualitative research, including the challenges of bracketing prior assumptions

    A Field Evaluation of the Efficacy of Milorganite as a Repellent for Non-Venomous Rat Snakes (Elaphe obsolete)

    The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of Milorganite® as a repellent for rat snakes. Milorganite® is the bio solids by-product left from the activated sludge process from the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewer District. During 3, 7-day release periods, 5-6 mature rat snakes were placed within a 0.1ha plastic fence enclosure intended to impede escape. The enclosure contained natural and artificial hides and water. Snakes were fitted with an externally attached radio transmitter with location of each snake determined 3 times per day by radio telemetry and visual confirmation. During the first 2, 7-day period, with no Milorganite® treatment, snakes were contained within the enclosure for a similar (p\u3e0.05) duration of 9.1h±1.8 and 9.4h±1.8 respectively, before escaping. Prior to release of snakes in period 3, a total of 907.2g of Milorganite® was applied by hand in a 20cm width strip along the interior perimeter of the enclosure fence. During period 3, 6 snakes were maintained within the enclosure longer (p\u3c 0.005) compared to periods 1 and 2, with an average containment time of 23.5h/day±0.5. Total snake-hours that animals were maintained in the enclosure was higher (p\u3c0.005) during the Milorganite® treatment (164.0h±1.4) compared to non-treated period 1 (64.0h±1.8) or period 2 (66.0h±9.0). All snakes remained within the enclosure throughout the 7-day treatment period. One snake died on day 6, posttreatment from unknown causes. Results of this study suggest Milorganite® was effective as a repellent for the rat snake under these experimental conditions

    Implementing a Case-Based Research Data Management Curriculum

    OBJECTIVE: The Lamar Soutter Library of the University of Massachusetts Medical School is working with partner librarians at MBL-WHOI, Northeastern, Tufts and UMass Amherst on a NN/LM NER grant to author online modules and develop additional Research Data Management (RDM) Teaching Cases based on the UMMS/WPI Data Management Frameworks. The goal is to create an online curriculum to support these institution’s researchers’ data management (RDM) practices. METHODS: The criteria for module content were developed by an evaluation expert using the NSF data management plan requirements. To develop additional RDM Teaching Cases librarians conducted semi-structured data interviews with researchers. The librarians transcribed and coded these interviews using a validated RDM planning instrument to categorize the projects’ RDM challenges. The librarians then authored case narratives based on the data interview, highlighting these authentic challenges along with a set of discussion and comprehension questions to support learner outcomes. RESULTS: Currently there are seven modules in addition to the RDM Teaching Cases being authored by the project partners. The first drafts of the Module content and Teaching Cases are due for completion in spring 2013. CONCLUSIONS: A Data Management Curriculum and RDM Teaching Cases will provide libraries with an educational resource for teaching best practices and supporting their student and faculty research. These educational materials will help to provide researchers and future-researchers with valuable lessons to improve the management of their data throughout the stages of their projects, and will encourage them to see the relationships between managing their data and sharing their data in the future

    An Assessment of Needed Competencies to Promote the Data Curation and Management Librarianship of Health Sciences and Science and Technology Librarians in New England

    Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate health sciences and science and technology librarians’ needed data curation and management (DCM) competencies to support nascent and future patron and institutional eScience research endeavors. The data from this research will be used to align a data curation and management curriculum with the educational needs of an online eScience portal community of users, and create relevant future professional development for librarians interested in data curation and eScience librarianship. Setting/Participants: The study targeted the needed data curation and data management competencies of health sciences and science and technology librarians in six U.S. states who are on a listserv of librarians interested in learning about eScience. The sample for this study was 63 librarians. Methodology: The team created the assessment tool using content analyses of digital curation and management library literature and LIS data management curricula. The survey contained 15 open-ended and closed-ended questions and was distributed to 141 librarians using Survey- Monkey (http://www.surveymonkey.com). Results/Outcomes: The team identified twenty needed competency areas related to data curation and data management. The participants identified the necessary competencies to provide data curation and data management services. Results revealed a small number of librarians engaged in DCM and infrequent data services requests. Findings suggest there is an increase in libraries pursuing strategic plans concerning data management and the library community needs to cultivate a diverse range of technical and non-technical competencies through future professional development. Librarians saw their future roles involving DCM and sought competencies in conducting data interviews with patrons and helping patrons with NSF data management requirements. The survey results indicate the greatest need for librarians is technical hands-on training in the digital description and curation of large data sets. Discussion/Conclusion: Librarians are interested in developing data curation and data management competencies to support eScience. These data indicate that future relevant professional development for librarians interested in eScience should focus on non-technical and technical DCM competencies

    Field Evaluation of Two External Attachment Location of Radio Transmitters on Non-Venomous Rat Snakes (elaphe obsolete)

    The objective of this study was to determine the effectiveness of external attachment of radio transmitters at one of two locations on mature rat snakes (Elaphe obsolete). Transmitters were attached to mature snakes (n = 10; 136.7cm ± 6.4) on either the ventral surface (n = 5) or dorsal-lateral surface of the rib cage (n = 5), approximately 25cm cranially to the cloaca. Transmitters (18mm × 8mm × 2mm) were attached by one drop of acrylamide gel glue to the adhering side of camouflage duct tape (20cm × 30mm), a single drop of glue on the exposed side of the transmitter, and secured by wrapping the tape to the snake’s body with the transmitter in the appropriate location. A second piece of duct tape (20cm × 40mm) overlapped and secured the first piece of tape with the transmitter. Snakes were placed in a 0.1ha plastic fence enclosure, (128.5cm ± 0.5 height, and 17.1° ± 0.5 inward slope) in an unimproved pasture with numerous hides, water and food. Snakes (n = 4) shed their skin and the transmitter, within 6- 17d post-attachment (11.7d ± 2.4). Snakes (n = 4) escaping the enclosure and not located, ranged from 1- 21d post-attachment, (12.3d ± 4.7). There was no difference (p \u3e 0.05) in functional days snakes were located by radio telemetry due to attachment site or sex. Transmitter reception distance was typically \u3c 50m and often problematic. Results of this study suggest that the location of external attachment of transmitters had no influence on duration of effectiveness. However, shedding and limited telemetry range under these conditions should be considered to determine if the methodology is appropriate for the desired objectives

    A Sample of Research Data Curation and Management Courses

    Objective This paper identifies a sample of research data curation and management courses available at American Library Association-accredited Library and Information Science (LIS) Programs in North America. Methods This sample was identified through a content analysis of LIS program course descriptions and syllabi (N=58). Using a framework of research data management and curation competencies, the team gathered a sample of research data curation and management courses offered between fall 2011 and summer 2012. Results Only 13 (22%) of LIS programs currently offer a course focused on the management and curation of research data. Conclusion Although the literature supports LIS professionals adopting new roles and engaging in eScience and data management, most LIS data-related programs do not have a separate course solely focused on research data management. More LIS programs will need to adapt their curricula in order to help students and practicing professionals develop the needed competencies in research data curation and management

    Knee Pain Predicts Subsequent Shoulder Pain and the Association Is Mediated by Leg Weakness: Longitudinal Observational Data from the Osteoarthritis Initiative

    Objective: To assess whether the ‘spread’ of joint pain is related to pain-associated muscle loss in one joint leading to increased loading and subsequent pain in other joints. Methods: Associations between persistent knee pain (pain in one or two knees over years 0-3 versus no persistent pain) and incident shoulder pain at year 4 were examined in participants from the longitudinal NIH Osteoarthritis Initiative (OAI). Associations were assessed using log multinomial modelling, adjusted for age, sex, BMI, depression score, other lower limb pain and baseline leg weakness (difficulty standing from a sitting position). Results: In older adults with clinically significant knee OA or at risk of knee OA (n=3486), the number of painful joints increased yearly, from 2.1 joints (95% CI 2.0, 2.2) at baseline increasing by 5.2% (95% CI 2.2%, 8.3%) at year 4. Shoulders were the next most commonly affected joint after knees (28.5%). Persistent pain in 1 or 2 knees increased risk of bilateral shoulder pain at year 4 (1 knee RR 1.59 (95% CI 0.97, 2.61); 2 knees RR 2.02 (1.17, 3.49)) after adjustment for confounders. Further adjustment for leg weakness attenuated effect sizes (1 knee RR 1.13 (95% CI 0.60, 2.11); 2 knees RR 1.44 (0.75, 2.77)), indicating mediation by functional leg weakness. Conclusions: Spread of joint pain is not random. Persistently painful knees predict new bilateral shoulder pain, which is likely mediated by leg weakness; suggesting that biomechanical factors influence the spread of pain

    Building an eScience Thesaurus for Librarians: A Collaboration Between the National Network of Libraries of Medicine, New England Region and an Associate Fellow at the National Library of Medicine

    Objective: In response to the growing interest and adoption of eScience roles by librarians, those from the National Network of Libraries of Medicine, New England Region (NN/LM NER) and an Associate Fellow from the National Library of Medicine collaborated to build an eScience Thesaurus. The Thesaurus will introduce librarians to terminology and concepts in eScience, point to relevant literature and resources on data and digital research topics, and provide links to interviews with librarians and experts working in eScience-related roles. The eScience Thesaurus is a starting place for librarians to find the vocabulary to research the background, resources, and tools necessary for developing their capacity to provide eScience-related services. Methods: The Associate Fellow completed a review of eScience-related literature to identify the seminal publications for the originations of these terms and concepts as they apply to libraries. Next, the Associate Fellow worked with the NN/LM NER to compile an environmental scan of resources that would be useful and applicable for librarians, and created a scope document and record structure. The team interviewed prominent librarians working in eScience roles and experts that have created digital tools and services used by the library community. Finally, the team sent the Thesaurus records out to five members of the advisory and editorial review boards from the eScience Portal for New England Librarians for evaluation. Results: The eScience Thesaurus is now hosted on the eScience Portal for New England Librarians’ website. It provides a comprehensive list of more than 50 different terminologies and concepts, with links to seminal and relevant literature, resources, grants, and interviews on a variety of eScience-related topics. Conclusion: The eScience Thesaurus is an evolving resource; as the field expands and more eScience-related terms are adopted by the library and information science community, the Portal will enable its users to electronically submit new vocabulary and records to the Thesuarus, thus preserving it as a go-to eScience resource for librarians
